Why did you decide to take part in the workshops?
My wife and I set up Consett Popcorn Company back in 2009, but after being made redundant from my job in IT, I decided it was time to take the company to the next level – the workshops were just the ticket to help us along.
What did you aim to get out of the sessions?
As a start-up company, it is essential to know the right way to approach potential investors as well as the day-to-day aspects of financial planning and reporting, such as cash flow, profit and loss and balance sheets. I hoped to learn how to do all of these things in the most effective way possible – something I can safely say the workshops have taught me.
What did you enjoy most about attending?
The course trainers engaged everyone on the course in a fun and interactive way and we were able to practice real life scenarios, such as pitching to your bank manager. I’ve now been able to do this in reality!
How have you used what you learnt within your business?
The workshops have helped me work out quotes for the launch of new products and calculate turnover based on ‘what if’ projections. I also feel skilled enough to pitch to investors and I’ve built up a relationship with my bank which has been vital in securing the loan that has given us the means to grow.
What benefits have the sessions brought to your business?
Since attending the course the business has gone from strength to strength. With our new range launching both regionally and nationally, we have expanded into new premises and now have the capability to take production to the next level. As a result we have also employed a new member of staff and our progress has been tracked in the Sunday Times. I would say that the workshops have played a direct part in our development.
Would you recommend the sessions to other businesses?
Absolutely – it’s a fantastic course and any entrepreneur running their own business should definitely take part.
